Hag Al Leila – a joyous celebration of goodwill!

Garangao, Gergaoon, Garangesho, and Gargean; are some of the many names for the popular traditional festival “Hag Al Leila”. It is celebrated in various Middle Eastern countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman. This occasion is marked by lively festivities and cultural rituals, that hold a special place in the hearts of communities across the region. History: 
The Islamic lunar calendar observes Hag Al Laila on the fifteenth night of Sha’ban, the eighth month. It occurs about two weeks ahead of the fasting month of Ramadan. The celebration has its roots in Islamic customs and is frequently timed around the appearance of the full moon.

There are many stories as to why people celebrate this festival. It is believed that God came to Mecca to pray on this day and others believe that it is a blessed night and this is the day when Fathima, the daughter of prophet Mohammad distributed sweets two weeks before Ramadan.

How do they celebrate it? 
Children in Emirati celebrate this centuries-old custom by gathering together and collecting candies and treats by going door to door singing a traditional song ‘Atoona Allah yaa’teekoum bet Makah yewadeekoum,’ which means ‘Give to us and God will give to you”.The event intends to spread awareness of the occasion and the month of Ramadan while encouraging the virtues of generosity and sharing. The celebration is believed to serve as protection against ill fortune and evil spirits. It is believed that giving out candy will ward off negativity and bring prosperity to the neighbourhood.

Families dress in traditional attire, Particularly children in the happy mood. The giving out of candies and treats is a defining feature of Hag Al Laila. Arabic desserts, chocolates, and nuts are among the special sweets that families make and share with their neighbours, friends, and kids.
