San Diego, California, United States of America
Museum featuring intricate model train displays and exhibits.
Hop on a ride of the largest display of train models in North America at the Railroad Museum, with its interactive exhibits having realistic landscapes through miniature rail routes. Intricate craftsmanship, innovation, and history meet here.
Located within Balboa Park’s Casa de Balboa, the San Diego Model Railroad Museum would easily rank as the largest model railroad museum in North America based upon its 27,000 sq ft of tiny awesomeness! Founded in 1982, the museum recreates California’s railroading past through intricately built models and engaging displays.
Encounter large spectacles like the Cabrillo Southwestern O-scale layout and the San Diego & Arizona Eastern HO-scale model line that focuses on the 1950s journey from San Diego to El Centro. Enjoy the fun Toy Train Gallery to interact with Lionel trains for every age!
Out back, the Freight and Flora garden railway displays G‑gauge trains that run over solar-powered installations of miniature worlds resembling what San Diego looked like in the 1880s. See what you can find and not just the tiny shark in the pool as you ride the “Choo‑Choo Cam” and get a conductor’s view.
In only a couple hours, you will be transported from miniature mountains to desert valleys and infused with a mixture of technical beauty, local history, and whimsical charm.
From I-5 South: Exit at 10th Avenue, turn left on A St, turn left again on Park Blvd, and follow signs to Balboa Park.
