Tips for the Best Experience

  • The first travel tip to be mindful about is that the lakeside region has little shade so it's best to pack sunscreen or a hat to protect yourself from sunburn.
  • Next, parking is difficult at Lake Merritt as there's no dedicated parking lot at Lake Merritt Station as of September 2024, so plan accordingly. The majority of accessible parking is available near the Lakeside Park entrance on Bellevue Avenue, otherwise, on-street parking is the only option.
  • It is advised to consider using public transit or biking if you want to avoid the stress of parking. The area is well-connected, so combining transit options like BART metro + bus is easy if you're coming from farther away.
  • Also, keep note that washrooms or restrooms are mainly available at Snow Park, Fairyland, the Boating Center, and the Municipal Boathouse in Lake Merritt.
  • If you want to hit the water, the Lake Merritt Boating Center rents pedal boats, canoes, kayaks, and rowboats. Do not forget to bring ID and cash, as credit cards are not accepted. Life jackets are mandatory there even if you don't plan to get wet.
  • Lake Merritt is the hub for community events particularly on weekends. To keep track of it during your visit, check the local event pages for timetables.
